Introduction
I’ve been heavily involved with video games of different genres for as long as I can remember. From my first Nintendo DS to now where I have custom-built my own gaming computer that lets me push the boundaries of gaming. From the looks of my gaming portfolio and a short introduction about me, it’s difficult to overlook something that has become part of my lifestyle.
Every day when I wake up, my friends and family rarely see me not on my computer. Even while I was developing this portfolio, I was doing repeat requests on Summoners War: Chronicles! I can’t help but stick to a routine that’s fun and entertaining.
However, enough about my spill about my love for computers and video games... Well, not entirely because the purpose of this statement is to summarize the unique development of my identity as an interactive narrative/game designer. Another title that I will also add to my list of other titles: Technical Communicator, UX Researcher, Information Designer, etc. Whatever it is, I could probably agree with you and say that I’ve been there and done that.
Background Information
Before college, I’ve always been keen on joining the gaming industry. I wanted to have a hobby (or a job!) That made me feel comfortable and happy. When I went to KSU, I started as an IT major… until I realized how much coding was a pain for me. So, I switched to Technical Communication, a degree where I can freely do writing, researching, and designing. It’s so versatile that it’s overwhelming to think of the many choices I have laid out in front of me right now.
My love for video games has grown since taking Digital Rhetoric, writing about ethics in video games and play. However, it has grown even more since I’ve taken Interactive Narrative Games recently.
How did my interest grow in less than a year? Well, I was able to focus more on creating engaging fictional narratives the entire summer! I was able to let my imagination run wild and develop fun concepts despite the harsh reality of life eating away at me. My mission as an Interactive Narrative Designer is to recreate that out-of-this-world experience for my audience. No matter if it’s just one person or thousands of you out there, we all crave and want to be out of the loop just for a moment.
My Gaming Portfolio
I debated on whether I should’ve included these projects that I’ve created on my main portfolio. Why yes, they’re assignments, but they’re much deeper than that for me. This is also my passion. This shows a side of me that I want both casual and professional people of the world to see. It’s one of the key traits that I have that makes me, well me! I want to break those barriers at least a little bit to let you into what I want to create (or have created!).
Below in the gaming section of my portfolio are a mixture of projects from both the Digital Rhetoric and Interactive Narrative Games courses. These projects range from papers about ethics, rhythm game reviews, and conceptualized games. Even though I’m not a game designer, I can still talk about the ethical implications of player interactions with Animal Crossing NPCs. I can still do research and write about the pony types in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic in a D&D-style document!
I’ve rambled on enough about myself and these projects. If you’re interested in my ideas and want to collaborate or perhaps even hire me, don’t be afraid to contact me! Now while you read through my projects, I’m going to go back to doing my daily chores on Stardew Valley…
Kind regards,
Sherry Carswell
