Information Design
Project Overview
The redesigned menu of Queen Tea was from Information Design I where we had to critique and analyze issues with a document in the real world. I redesigned a menu from one of the locations in Marietta, GA, and received feedback from the class.
Project Background
Bubble tea shops have become a hot topic among young children and adults as many shops use colorful text and pictures to attract these specific customers. Queen Tea’s menu offers a colorful design with numerous items on the menu ranging from milk teas to coffee, and snacks.
Additionally, the menu targets this audience who either may be familiar with bubble tea from social media or from previous experience. Once someone goes to enough of these tea shops, it’s easy for some to memorize the popular flavors and toppings like strawberry milk and matcha tea.
The original menu made it difficult for new customers to order their drinks and dim sum.
Programs used: Adobe Photoshop

Project Goals
- Utilize Queen Tea's brand identity for the menu redesign.
- Learn more about the elements of information design.
- Visualize the intended audience for the menu.
Method
I have performed a design analysis of the design in the form of a memo. The memo discusses key concepts of design- alignment, color, contrast, typography, and intended audience. I also took the time to receive feedback from my classmates and professor. Any changes that were necessary were made, such as alignment issues, colors, etc.

The first artboard of the common boba tea flavors. A legend is included for the customers.

The second artboard of the redesigned menu. This shows the dim sum and other drinks on the board.
I've decided on creating a three-column format for the menu because it simplifies the structure. Customers are able to skim through the menu much quicker and can quickly identify which flavors are popular. The legend on the bottom right of the menu helps customers identify not only popular flavors but also options that the drinks have.
This means more questions about a worker's favorite drink and fewer "umm".
Key Takeaways
This project taught me how to better plan a document redesign for a restaurant menu in an academic setting. I also learned new tools on Adobe Photoshop such as the artboard features and the many benefits it has.
Furthermore, if I had unlimited time and resources for this project, I would offer to make changes to their other location in Acworth, GA. They have a larger menu than the Kennesaw location which creates a similar issue as well. Learning information design through menus opens up a challenge for a junior designer. There are so many elements that are included and it's even more difficult without a Style Guide in-hand. This left room for making design decisions while redesigning the menu.
